Natural Resources
Canada (NRCan) is a federal government department specializing in
the sustainable development and use of natural resources, energy, minerals
and metals, forests and earth sciences. At NRCan, we deal with natural
resource issues that are important to Canadians. We look at these issues
from both a national and international perspective, using our expertise
in science and technology, policy and programs. How we manage our land
and resources today will determine the quality of life for Canadians both
now and in the future.
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) has a broad mandate in Nunavut including the management of land, water and mineral resources on Crown Land. INAC also supports Inuit interests in the development of a successful and diversified economy, the delivery of programs to support Inuit development projects in the territory and the implementation of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. Another key role for INAC in Nunavut is the management and remediation of contaminated sites that fall under the department's responsibility
The Government of Nunavut is the
territorial government of Nunavut and came into being through the Nunavut
Land Claims Agreement. The Government of Nunavut is composed of ten departments
which include:
Community and Government Services, Culture, Language, Elders and Youth,
Education, Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs, Finance, Human Resources,
Health and Social Services, Justice, Environment, and Economic Development
and Transportation. These departments provide a wide range of services
tailored to the unique needs of its 29,500 people, of which 85% are Inuit.

Nunavut Tunngavik
Incorporated (NTI) was set up as a private corporation in 1993, to
ensure that promises made in the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement are carried
out. The negotiated land claims Agreement is based on and reflects objectives
and clarifies the rights to ownership and use of land and resources, and
of rights for Inuit to participate in decision-making concerning the use,
management and conservation of land, water and resources, including the
offshore.
