Climate Change (2001)

Climate change is an important issue for all Nunavumiut. Climate researchers predict that the most significant changes in our climate will occur in Arctic regions. In Nunavut, ties to the land are strong and changes in climate and the natural environment may have consequences for traditional lifestyles. Climate change may also affect future development in the North, having implications for resource development, infrastructure and transportation. The Degress of Variation poster, is part of a national poster series looking at climate change issues within different regions of Canada. It was funded by the Climate Change Action Fund and was compiled in partnership with the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), the Canada-Nunavut Geoscience Office and Balanced Environment Associates. Northern peoples have a significant tie to the land and are already noticing changes. Therefore the intent of the Nunavut poster is to provide scientific explanations for things that may be occurring and to present options that every northerner can implement to help reduce or prevent further environmental changes. The poster will promote discussion among northern stakeholders and serve as a catalyst for increased awareness, communication between stakeholders and scientists, and development of effective environmental management.
